Buds and Leaves

Leaves and buds are a big part of spring, so I thought I'd post these pictures before Bloom Day.

In addition to the flowers, a beautiful aspect of spring is the new green leaves.

Parsley Hawthorn

I love the dappled pattern the shadows of leaves make on tree trunks.

Highbush blueberry

The downy silver leaves of Serviceberry almost look like Pussy Willow catkins as they emerge.

First Breath of Spring, with its last flowers.

Buds of wild crabapple

White Piedmont azalea

Pink Piedmont azalea. The buds look to me like the heads and necks of swan or geese.

Baptisia australis

Amsonia tabernaemontana

Iris 'Crimson King'

Sweet Betsy

Dwarf Crested Iris

  1. Thank you for putting me in the spring mood (and reminding me Bloom Day is tomorrow and that I need to go and snap some photos today, between rain showers)! P.S. I do love the shadows on the tree trunks photo.

  2. Sweet Bay what beautiful photos. I especially loved the azaleas because we don't see them up in my area.

  6. Thank you everyone for your comments. I really appreciate them. Yes, the Sweet Betsy is fragrant! We bought that one from the NC Botanical Garden. It wasn't in flower at the time we bought it, but the stems and leaves were fragrant so it seemed like a good bet. It may be a seedling of the Calycanthus next to the Paul Green Cabin -- that one is so large and flowers so much that it probably produces a lot of seeds. And that one is very fragrant. What I love most is the fact that the fragrance wafts. :)

  7. You're right. The patterns and textures of the new foliage are as beautiful as the flowers.

  8. I'm loving the new green at this time of year.

Everything's so fresh like your hawthorn photo.

  9. Oh my gosh, SweetBay, I am in awe of all the beauties you have growing there in your gardens. Everything is wonderful! How blessed you are to live where you do.

I've definitely got to add more color to my gardens. I love all of your purples. Your two spiderworts are great. I really like the white one with blue stamens. The kind I have are blue, don't know the name and don't even know where I got them. I love and enjoy them.

Even though I am a tad 'green' from viewing your lovely blooms, I thank you for the inspiration you've given me to keep on working in my gardens.
